Idaho may not have their own NFL team, but there’s no shortage of fans in the Gem State. For the most part, proximity seems to be the prevailing determiner for professional gridiron fandom. Aside from smaller fan bases, it’s the Seahawks and 49ers.
It’s week 2 of NFL preseason and as with every other year, anything goes in pre-season. New offense. New defense. New players getting a shot. Seasoned players getting cut (Tebow link). Pre-season is a relatively low-stakes workshop for assessing player skills and exploring various strategies. It may not count in regular-season play but football is back.
Seattle Seahawks
Heading Into 2021 Season keep an eye on DK Metcalf who was recently named One Of 10 Best Players Under 25. Also, D-back Jamal Adam is now the highest-paid safety in the NFL with a 4-year, $70 million contract. Will he play for all he’s worth and is it worth it? Head Coach, Pete Carroll is 71. This might be his last season. Who will take over? There’s plenty of down markers to go before post-season play, but let’s see if Seattle can pull their offense together and find redemption after last year’s stunning wild-card loss to division rivals, the Rams. Seattle’s next pre-season game is Saturday, August 21 at 8 PM against Denver on the NFL Network. After missing the opener, QB Russell Wilson will return for game two of the pre-season. (we could probably lose this last sentence -ss)
San Francisco 49ers
After ending a decidedly mediocre 2020 season, the 49ers have nowhere to go, but up. Garoppolo returns as starting QB, but it will be interesting to see how rookie Trey Lance develops this season. His scintillating performance in his first preseason game only has this QB battle heating up. For 2021, the 49ers will benefit from the return of Joey Bosa tighter play execution, fewer turnovers, and a healthier bench (In 2020, SF had a record 18 players injured reserve). San Franciso’s next pre-season game is Sunday, August 22 at 2 PM against the LA Chargers on the NFL Network.
