Choosing between the two platforms is tricky, and it’s not about just movies, TV shows, and pricing. Since both Netflix and Amazon Prime are expanding their services to other areas like live streaming and wrestling, choosing between the two has only gotten more difficult.

Fortunately, I have done the legwork for you by comparing the two platforms in all these aspects, and with this article, I am here to help you out.

Both platforms offer quality content and features, but Netflix is a clear winner for me because of two crucial aspects—content and user interface. 

The ultra-vast Netflix library has enough original and on-demand titles to suit almost any viewer’s taste—something the current Amazon Prime lineup simply can’t compete with.

However, that doesn’t mean you must decide immediately, as Amazon Prime still has the highest streaming service market share, is more affordable, and has unique benefits.

Netflix offers three base plans ranging from $7.99/month to $24.99/month, while Amazon Prime only offers two plans, the cheaper one priced at $8.99/month.

While Netflix doesn’t offer free trials, Amazon Prime offers a 30-day free trial to many of its users. If you are eligible, you can enjoy all Amazon Prime benefits for 30 days and then decide if paying for them is worth it.

Netflix’s costs have recently risen, with plans starting at $7.99/month and going all the way up to $24.99/month. While the starter plan (Standard with Ads) is slightly cheaper than Amazon’s standalone Prime Video plan, it comes with caveats like ads and limited access to content. 

If you want to get rid of these caveats, you can go for the ad-free Standard plan, which gives you full access to Netflix’s library.

However, if you want the most out of your Netflix account, I’d rather recommend the Premium plan, which is Netflix’s topmost plan tier and offers 4K streaming and other benefits.

On Standard and Premium plans, you can also add an extra member—say, a friend or a distant family member—to your Netflix account. They get their own account and password and all your plan benefits. 

But their subscription cost, which is $6.99/month/member (with ads) or $8.99/month/member (without ads), is included in your monthly bill. To save on your Netflix purchase, have a look at any live Netflix deals. 

While Amazon Prime doesn’t let you add extra members this way, it allows you to get add-on subscriptions instead, which brings us to the next section.

The Amazon Prime subscription works differently than Netflix because it also offers other benefits like free shipping, audiobooks, ebooks, and music along with a Prime Video subscription. 

Even with these benefits, it costs just $14.99/month—$3/month less than Netflix’s Standard plan—and even lets you save over $40 more if you go for the annual billing option at $139/month.

However, if streaming is your only focus, Amazon offers a standalone Prime Video plan at $8.99/month (no annual billing). You get the same streaming features without other Prime benefits. Also, both subscription methods allow a 30-day Amazon Prime Video free trial. 

But there’s a big catch. Both Amazon Prime and the Prime Video subscriptions are ad-based. Going ad-free costs an additional $2.99/month, meaning you must effectively pay at least around $12/month (with the Prime Video plan) for an ad-free Prime Video.

Well, a separate ad-free plan would’ve seemed much more convenient to me. But since it’s still cheaper than Netflix’s ad-free plans anyway, I have no big complaints.

Besides the streaming features, Amazon Prime offers something Netflix doesn’t: add-on subscriptions. You can purchase over 100 add-on subscriptions, including Apple TV+, Max, MGM+, and Crunchyroll, directly from your Prime Video account—obviously, for an additional price.

Verdict: 

While Netflix offers a cheaper starting plan, Amazon Prime is much more affordable overall because of annual billing and cheaper ad-free plans.

Comparing Netflix and Amazon’s content lineups is very subjective. This is why I have focused on some universal factors, such as the variety of content and audience ratings, to help you get a rough idea.

Netflix Content Lineup

Few platforms come close to Netflix when it comes to the range of available content.  The original content library is much larger than Prime Video’s and boasts highly-rated shows worldwide, such as Stranger Things, Money Heist, and Squid Game. 

However, what I love about Netflix is that it doesn’t make its movies and shows the only center of attraction. There are loads of popular anime titles, classic Studio Ghibli films, gripping original documentaries, and reality shows, too, along with a wide range of kids’ content for young viewers.

Put simply, Netflix’s library is the nearest you can get to a well-rounded content lineup.

Amazon Prime Content Lineup

Amazon lags far behind Netflix in terms of original programming. However, it somewhat compensates with its huge number of movies spanning genres and age groups. 

A glimpse of Prime Video’s library

You can stream award-winning shows and movies like The Dark Knight, Joker, and The Lord of the Rings, as well as many Amazon original movies like My Fault, Sound of Metal, and One Night in Miami. It also has many original dramas, documentaries, anime, and kids’ content, but the library is still much less vast than Netflix’s.

Of course, you can expand your library as much as you like with all the add-on subscriptions. But that costs more money and is not really a benefit.

As I tested Netflix and Amazon Prime on different devices, I mostly found similarities, but with a few differences.

Netflix offers a decent interface across its mobile, desktop, and TV versions. You can easily browse titles based on categories, genres, popularity, and other factors. 

Searching for titles is only a tap or click away, and you can also quickly add shows or movies to your watchlist. 

All the content features aside, Netflix also offers a large collection of 80+ games. So, just in case you are a little bored of watching shows and movies, you can have fun playing exclusive ad-free games, too.

Returning to content, Netflix recently launched a new feature called Moments on its mobile apps. It lets you save your favorite scenes while watching a show or movie. You can then come back to this scene later or even share it online. 

Besides this unique feature, Netflix has all the common ones, too, like multiple profiles (up to five) and customizable parental controls.

Amazon Prime User Experience And Features

Prime Video is on par with Netflix in most aspects. The navigation is easy, as is the search, and the streaming player is smooth and simple. 

Unlike on the Netflix mobile app, you can change the streaming quality while playing a video. 

That said, I was not very satisfied with the experience on desktop, since it’s noticeably laggy sometimes both on the web and the desktop app. While it doesn’t always affect the streaming experience, it surely affects navigation.

That aside, Prime Video also has this interesting feature called X-Ray, which gives you detailed info about a scene, such as the actors, behind-the-scenes videos, and some interesting nuggets of info/trivia.

Other than that, Amazon Prime also lets you add multiple profiles (up to six), set parental controls, and add titles to your watchlist. There is also a separate tab for downloads on the Prime Video app, which is absent on Netflix.

Verdict:

Both platforms have similar features, but Netflix has a much smoother UI.

Now that we have gone through the technicalities let’s look at some Reddit reviews and understand the general user perception of the “Netflix vs. Amazon Prime” debate.

While many users think that Netflix and Amazon Prime have their own advantages, the overall viewer perception seems to favor Netflix over Prime mainly because of the former’s superior lineup and UI.

What’s New On Netflix And Amazon Prime

While Netflix and Amazon Prime differ in many different ways, both platforms keep coming up with new updates and additions to improve their overall value and attract more users.

In January this year, Netflix became the exclusive live streaming platform for WWE Raw in the United States and many other countries. You can now watch Raw Live every Monday at 8 PM ET. 

The best part? The live show is available at no additional cost with all Netflix plans—yes, even with the limited Standard with Ads plan.

Later this year, Netflix also plans to start offering the WWE2K games to its subscribers, making it even better if you are a WWE fan.

On the other hand, Amazon Prime is also ramping up its wrestling game with its new AEW deal. You can watch AEW’s pay-per-view content on Prime Video via the AEW Revolution add-on. 

However, unlike Thursday Night Live games that come included with the Prime membership, each AEW event costs additional money.

The Bottom Line: Netflix Wins

While Netflix and Amazon Prime have their own sets of pros and cons, Netflix fares much better than Prime Video in multiple ways.

• Netflix has a much larger and more diverse library of high-quality content, including originals and on-demand titles. 
• Netflix’s app and website have a smooth UI, while Amazon Prime is often laggy.
• While Amazon Prime offers a lot of add-on subscriptions, they all cost you more money, while Netflix keeps it simple.

These distinctions make Netflix a clear winner for me. However, let’s not forget that Amazon Prime is comparatively cheaper and, unlike Netflix, actively offers free trials and other Prime benefits. So, think it through before deciding.
